Known as the ‘Coffee of Popes and Kings’, Puerto Rican coffee is one of the island’s best kept secrets. Puerto Rico was once the world’s sixth largest exporter of coffee, enjoyed in the finest salons in Vienna and throughout Europe while Puerto Rico was still a Spanish colony. Coffee remains a matter of national pride, as this island continues to produce some of the world’s finest shade grown coffee.
Hacienda Gripinas has been producing single origin estate coffee since the 1800s and winning much deserved recognition, including the Grand Prix Gold Medal at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis. The Gripinas family home in Majorca still holds a piece of the mast from the first ship that brought Gripinas coffee from Puerto Rico to Spain for export, that’s how far back their history extends. Hacienda Gripinas is one of the original suppliers to the Vatican, and they have the records to prove it!
Located at Cerro Punta, the highest point of the Cordillera Mountains at an elevation of 4,200 feet, Hacienda Gripinas enjoys the ideal climate and necessary conditions for shade grown coffee. Only the very best ripe red beans are hand-picked for processing. Once processed, they are carefully sorted by hand for small batch roasting. Although hand sorting the beans is a tedious and time consuming process, it is important to ensure all beans are uniform for proper roasting. Hacienda Gripinas continues today to maintain the same traditional farming practices handed down through the generations of this family owned business. Considered la crème de la crème of Puerto Rican coffee, one taste and you will discover why popes and kings demanded Café Gripinas, for coffee connoisseurs everywhere.
