This coffee from Sari Makmur Group is from Aceh and Gayo Setie and comes from the farms of 206 small-holders, all of whom have less than 2 hectares (5 acres) planted with coffee. Coffees from this area have a characteristic robustness of flavour and a distinct pungency that many people find enjoyable. The flavours produced by this coffee have been likened to dark chocolate and red fruit, however this depends on the roast.
This has been a Rainforest Alliance certified coffee, which means strict environmental and ethical standards are maintained by all producer members of the Ramat Inara Co-operative. There are three varieties of coffee grown in this area, these being Longberry, Caturra and Typica. It is harvested between October and December and also between March and July in the ‘fly-crop’ which is peculiar to Sumatra and Columbia.
It is grown at approximately 4,500 ft within a temperature band of 18-22 degrees Centigrade with an average rainfall of 2 metres per year.
